Agong’s Birthday is a yearly event held to honor the head of state in Malaysia. Agong’s Birthday has been celebrated on the first Saturday in June since the Malaysian Constitution was put into place in 1957. Agong’s Birthday in 2012 will be held on June 2nd.

The holiday represents Monarch Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s birthday. Agong’s full title is Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Agong, Malaysia’s head of state, is largely a ceremonial figure. His birthday holds patriotic importance, and is mandated by the Malaysian Constitution. A massive parade is put on in Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the occasion. Another important ceremonial practice is the “Honours List,” a list that His Majesty produces every year to recognize exceptional contributors to the country.

The holiday is celebrated with parties and parades throughout Malaysia, but the most important celebration is held in Kuala Lumpur, the federal capital of Malaysia. Merdeka Square, or “Independence Square” in central Kuala Lumpur is the place to be on June 2nd. The official government parade is held at Merdeka Square every year. The state run Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) will broadcast the event live beginning at 7:30 AM on Saturday morning.

At Independence Square, His Majesty together with the commanders of Malaysia’s armed forces will perform a salute. The armed forces will parade through the square as trumpets blare and military helicopters fly overhead, in a massive display of patriotic force.
