The Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival is the island of Leyte’s most important festival, held every year in Tacloban City. This year’s festival is the 17th Pintados-Kasdyaan Festival, and the 26th year of the Pintados Festival. The event, often referred to as the Pintados Festival, or the Leyte Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival will be held on June 27th, 2012.

The Pintados Festival was a cultural and religious festival in Tacloban. The festival featured traditional body paint along with dance and music performances that displayed pre-Spanish mythology, rituals, and culture. Body paint represented status, beauty, and courage in pre-Spanish society. The more body paint that a Pintado warrior displayed, the more virtuous they were perceived to be.

After a push by businesspeople and local government in the 1980’s to expand the various regional festivals into one festival, The Kasadyaan Festival (held on June 30th) merged with the Pintados Festival to create the present-day Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival. Today, the joint festival honors the patron saint of Tacloban, Senior Santo Nino, along with honoring pre-colonial mythology and culture. The fusion between Catholic influences and traditional native influences come together in one of the Philippines’ most colorful and unique cultural festivals.

The Leyte Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals, the Pintados Festival Ritual Dance, and the Pagrayhak Grand Parade have been the traditional activities held on the 29th or 30th of June every year.

In recent years, the Pagrayhak Grand Parade began at the Balayuan Towers and zig-zagged its way through Tacloban City. This year, permits were not granted for the parade to take place in the city. Evening activities at RTR Plaza began on June 8th, 2012. Vibrant colors, dancing, traditional music, and revellers covered in bodypaint can be seen at the Leyte Sports Complex and throughout Tacloban on June 27th 2012.

While the Pintados Festival is in full swing, and will last throughout the entire month of June, the “Festival of Festivals” begins on June 27th, as the official Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival occurs. Book your hotel in Leyte today!
