Philippines Independence Day 2012 is observed on June 12th every year in the Philippines, Independence Day commemorates the Philippine Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898. The 114th Independence Day will be officially celebrated in the Philippines on June 12, 2012.

The Philippines declared independence on June 12, 1898, and since that declaration, Philippine Independence Day has been the most important government holiday in the country. Independence Day in the Philippines used to be celebrated on July 4th. As Spain and the United States did not recognize the official independence of the Philippines until July 4th, 1946, the holiday was held on July 4th until President Diosdado Macapagal declared that the date of the Declaration of Independence was the official day of independence. Since the President’s clarification in 1962,  Filipinos have celebrated their independence on June 12th.

Philippine Independence Day is celebrated all over the world. Every major city in the world with a significant Filipino population celebrates Philippines Independence Day. Filipino Americans will celebrate Independence Day with parties and parades in New York City on June 3rd of 2012. In the Philippines, schools, government operations, and many businesses close for the national holiday. Shopping centers and retail stores typically remain open during Independence Day.

Of course, the best place to celebrate Philippine Independence Day is in the Philippines. Nationwide parades occur through the Philippines, but Rizal Park, or Luneta Park, in the heart of Manila is the best place to take in the events. A flag raising ceremony is held early in the morning on June 12th, and a massive armed forces parade in Manila will headline the celebration. A speech from President Benigno S. Aquino III, as well as a 21-gun salute will also be featured.
