Phuket FantaSea in Phuket, Thailand

Phuket FantaSea is Thailand’s most famous theme park, and a must-see attraction for families visiting Phuket. This 140-acre “Disney-fied” theme park serves to thrill families and educate tourists about Thailand’s rich history and mythology. With activities, events and shows for all types, Phuket FantaSea makes for a great evening for families with children.

The park, which opened to the public in 1999, features beautiful scenery & decor on pristine grounds. While honoring and glorifying Thai culture, FantaSea simultaneously exudes a sanitized, commercial feel that can be found in few other places in the country. Carnival games, parades, elephant rides, unique shopping choices, and a massive buffet entertain you as you wait for the over-the-top main event “Fantasy of a Kingdom Show.”

Marvel at the the architectural masterpieces while perusing high-quality local goods, specialty shops, and gift shop fare on Carnival Village Shopping Street. You’ll see parades, pageants, street performers, and have the opportunity to partake in elephant rides. Adults can find restaurant fare and a beer garden at Kamala Pier Restaurant. The Similan Adventure Center is a marine-themed modern arcade that the kids will love.

The park’s gates open before 6:00 PM, leaving visitors time to enjoy the park’s many attractions, and grab a bite at the Golden Kinnaree Buffet Restaurant before the Fantasy of a King Show starts. Golden Kinnaree restaurant is a massive 4,000 seat dining hall, which serves up an eclectic buffet dinner for families. The restaurant hosts an extensive selection of Thai and international flavors, and should satisfy even the most picky eaters. While there are many better dining choices in Phuket, the add-on price of the buffet is reasonable, and the extensive menu make it a good choice for families.

Fantasy of a Kingdom Show

The Fantasy of a Kingdom show is located within a state-of-the-art 3,000 seat indoor theater. The show features jaw-dropping human and animal performances, costumes, and effects, though the storyline gets lost amongst its many meandering performances. The visuals include fireworks, lights, acrobats, jugglers, elephants, tigers and even a magic performance. Some visitors question the cultural relevance of the performances, others are simply blown away by the over-the-top Broadway-style showcasing of Thailand’s rich history.

The show starts at 9:00 PM and runs for about an hour-and-a-half. You will be asked to forfeit any picture-taking apparatus at the door of the theater (digital camera, camera phone, etc), and the queue to pick up cameras after the show can take 30+ minutes depending on the night. Many choose to leave cameras at their hotel to avoid the hassle, but many visitors are more than happy to wait in line to fetch their camera for the opportunity to take a picture with a tiger cub or a baby elephant after the show.
