Sofitel Philippine Plaza: Best Five-Star In Manila?

Sofitel Philippine Plaza

Sofitel Philippine Plaza is a can’t miss five-star resort-hotel in the centre of Manila. A popular choice for celebrities, local elites, and travelers with some money to spend, Sofitel Philippine Plaza is not just the only resort-hotel in Manila, it may be the best hotel in all of Manila.

Room With A View

Formerly a Westin hotel, the hotel changed hands in 2007, and has improved in both service and facilities since the change. The hotel has 609 rooms and suites, with balconies for all. Some rooms have views overlooking Manila Bay, and Intramuros. For the most part, rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable.

Sofitel Philippine Plaza is an older hotel – some rooms have worn carpet and most rooms have CRT televisions (though the hotel claims it’s upgrading to LCD screens). The hotel is diligently renovating and upgrading many of its suites. Ask for a room overlooking the pool, and you’ll get a magnificent view of the sunset from your balcony.

Lagoon-Shaped Swimming Pool

The jaw-dropping lobby, and the hotel’s swimming pool are two of the most notable attractions at Sofitel Philippine Plaza. The pool area features hammocks, swings, and lounge chairs that overlook the pool and Manila Bay. The lagoon-shaped swimming pool weaves in and out of walkways and seating areas, and is a stunning take on an urban resort pool.

You Can’t Get Closer To The Beach

The resort is right on top of the beach, you’re literally just feet from Manila Bay. In September 2011, strong waves and heavy rains damaged the seawall, and flooded the lobby of the hotel, as well as several of the restaurants. Guests had to be shuttled to other hotels in the area, and the hotel is still recovering from the damage.

Top-Notch Service

As with any five star hotel worth its salt, Sofitel Philippine Plaza’s service top-notch. Employees are presentable, courteous and ultra-helpful. The massages at Le Spa, and the SoFit on-site fitness center are highly recommended 24-hour facilities.  Spiral Restaurant is a top-pick of many hotel guests. The restaurant was damaged in the 2011 flood, and Sofitel plans to re-open it in August 2012.

A free hotel shuttle runs every 30 minutes, with frequent trips to SM Mall of Asia (Just 3km away). The hotel is located off of the main street, so hailing cabs is not easy, but the hotel staff is more than willing to call a taxi for you.

Just A Great Place To Stay

There’s nothing overly grand here, and no big novelties with this hotel. It’s just a great five star hotel with comfortable rooms and an unbeatable location. All of its properties, including Le Spa, Le Bar, and the pool employ servers & hosts who provide top-notch service. And we wouldn’t expect any less out of one of Manila‘s most popular five-star destinations.
